Our Mission
The mission of Student Support Services-TRIO is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of program participants at the University of New Mexico Main Campus. The SSS program draws upon a holistic framework where committed participants receive individualized support by addressing their educational and personal needs.
Services
Support services are offered through academic advising, tutoring, mentoring, career advisement, personal guidance, financial guidance, graduate school guidance, workshops, and social/cultural events. The program provides opportunities to apply for SSS Supplemental Grant Awards and exclusive TRIO scholarships. The awards/scholarships are contingent based upon available funds.
Program Background
The UNM SSS program is 100% federally funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education TRIO Programs. SSS is one of three TRIO programs originally funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965, the U.S. Department of Education Office of TRIO Programs.
SSS at The University of New Mexico - Main Campus is designed to increase the academic performance, retention, and graduation rates of program participants.
Who We Serve
UNM SSS targets 160 undergraduate students who are first-generation to college, low-income, and/or have a documented disability.
The term first-generation is codefied into law in the reauthorization of the federal 1980 Higher Education Act. It defines a first-generation students as an individual whose parent or guardian has not earned their bachelor's degree. The definition of low-income is also determined by federal TRIO criteria.
